  1. Statistics from the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) report that more than 230,000 Americans are being treated for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
  2. The total number of ESRD patients in the U.S. is increasing by about 10% a year.

  2. There are currently 3,082 dialysis facilities in the U.S.; 870 are hospital-based and 2,212 are freestanding.
  3. The current annual cost of treating ESRD in the U.S. is more than $14.5 billion.
  4. The current annual mortality rate of ESRD patients in the U.S. is about 24%.
  5. The remaining years of life on dialysis vary by age, sex and race. The average for a white male aged 40 to 44 is 6.9 years; the average for a black male in the same age group is 10 years. The average for a white female aged 40 to 44 is 7.1 years; the average for a black female in the same age group is 9.8 years.
